Traumatic Brain Injuries
You or your loved one may have a Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) if you have experienced a blow or jolt to the head, or a penetration of the brain, which disrupts brain function.
TBIs may be mild, moderate, or severe. Brain injury can affect thinking, language, emotions, memory, behavior, balance, and walking. It can cause depression, either directly (organic) or as a result of living with the symptoms of the injury. Even so-called “mild” TBIs can be permanent and life-altering.
Traumatic brain injuries are suffered by more than 1 million people in the United States each year.
Leading causes of TBIs are falls and automobile/motorcycle accidents. It is important for you to know that certain symptoms may arise as time passes. There is also potential increased risk for other brain disorders which can develop with age, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Even if TBI is permanent, there may be “cognitive therapies” that can help victims learn to cope better with daily life.
